We take time to explain each step in kid-friendly ways.

Quiet spaces, dimmable lights, and comforting tools for children sensitive to sights and sounds.

We guide children gently by showing them what to expect before starting.

Parents are encouraged to stay with their child during appointments.

Sedation dentistry, including nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), is available if needed.

Our pediatric dentists and staff are specially trained to work with children providing expert care at every step.

What Parents Need to Know Before Sleep Dentistry

At Greenwoods Pediatric Dental Centre, we take extra steps to ensure your child’s safety and comfort during sleep dentistry. Please review these important guidelines before your child’s appointment:

For Pediatric Patients

  • Fasting: No food or unclear liquids after midnight before the procedure.

  • Confirmation Call: Our team will contact you 48 hours prior to confirm your child’s appointment.

  • Medications: Follow your child’s doctor’s instructions on taking regular medications.

  • Accompaniment: A parent or legal guardian must stay in the dental office for the entire appointment, drive your child home, and supervise them for 24 hours after surgery.

    • Important: Failure to have an escort present (or if the escort leaves midway) will result in a $1000 fee.

Personal Items & Hygiene

  • Bring a comfort item (favorite blanket, small toy).

  • Dress your child in comfortable, loose clothing (pajamas, sweatpants, t-shirt). Avoid one-piece outfits. Older clothing is recommended; bring a backup set.

  • If your child uses diapers/pull-ups, bring extras.

  • Do not brush your child’s teeth the morning of the procedure. Our team will take care of this — it’s critical that no water enters your child’s system before the appointment.

What aftercare steps should I follow at home?

Make sure someone can stay and watch your child for the next 24 hours until the medication’s side effects are gone. You’ll know that the side effects are
gone when your child is no longer sleepy or numb.

• Try to make sure that your child doesn’t bite or suck on their lips, cheek or tongue for about 2 hours.

• If your child wants to sleep, have them lie on their side. Do not let them sleep on their back or stomach.

• Do not let your child sleep with extra pillows or blankets right after dental surgery.

Will my child be in pain?

Your child may be sore around their mouth, lips, and tongue on the day of the procedure.

If your health care provider says it’s OK, you may give non-prescription pain medicine, like acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or ibuprofen (Motrin®), as needed.

Do not give pain medication that has aspirin in it.

Always talk with your health care provider about any allergies your child may have before giving over-the-counter medication.

How can I make this process smoother?

We believe parents are essential partners in dental care. To help make your child’s visit smoother, we recommend:

  • Bringing familiar comfort items (toys, headphones, blankets)
  • Letting us know about specific triggers or accommodations in advance
  • Preparing your child with “social stories” or role-play about visiting the dentist
  • Scheduling morning appointments when kids are most relaxed
